What Is Android?

All of you may know what windows 98, windows XP and iOS are. For those who do not know, those are operating systems (OS) which are used in desktops and laptops. Similarly, for mobiles we have an OS named ‘JAVA’. Similarly android is nothing but an OS which has been developed using Java. Android is an operating system, which is designed especially for touch screen smart phones. It is based on the Linux kernel. Android OS was founded in California on October2003. In the year, 2007 Android Inc. got a tremendous development from google as well as mobile companies such as Sony, Samsung, HTC, etc.

You may be knowing that the first android smartphone was made available to the public at large by none other than HTC.  Android is one of the most popular mobile-based operating system and as of 2013. The devices equipped with android are sold in greater numbers as compared to other operating systems. The table given below shows the various versions of android along with their names and their released date.

From the above list Android 3.2 i.e. Honeycomb was not launched in India. 2.3.6 Which is Gingerbread was found in most mobiles as the default OS of the phone. 4.4 Kitkat is currently the latest Android version.  From v2.2 to v4.4, many apps were created and developed in time, which made many apps incompatible with the previous versions i.e. versions prior to Ice Cream Sandwich. There are many apps as well as games for Android. In Android, all setup files have .apk as their extension.  Latest Android phones supports Wi-Fi, GPS, 2G, 3G, 4G and all other modern facilities. Initially Android was used in smart phones, however due to recent developments they are now also used in diverse cameras, television sets, gaming consoles and some other electronic devices. We can use or install our Android apps on our desktop using a software known as Bluestacks.
